Synchronous learning is real-time instruction, where instructor and students participate at the same moment, whether the session is in a classroom or delivered live online through video, chat, and immediate feedback. This live interaction is what defines the experience as synchronous. In contrast, asynchronous formats let students access materials and complete work on their own schedule, with no real-time participation. HyFlex is a flexible model that lets students choose online or in-person for each session and can include live components, but it isn’t defined solely by the timing. Hybrid courses mix online and in-person delivery as well, and can include either synchronous or asynchronous elements depending on the session. Not-for-Credit instruction relates to how a course is funded or credited, not how the session is conducted. So the modality that occurs in real time, online or in person, is synchronous learning.
